Pelvic Pressure

Are you feeling discomfort and cramping in your lower abdomen? Does it feel similar to menstrual cramps? This pregnancy symptom may have you on the phone calling your obstetrician for reassurance, but more times than not, there's no need to be alarmed. What you're feeling is known as "pelvic pressure" and it's quite normal.

Some women feel this pressure from early in their pregnancy right up until the day they deliver, while others are not bothered by it at all. There are two reasons you may be feeling this pressure: your expanding uterus is putting pressure on your pelvis, and your ligaments are stretching. As your uterus expands, it pushes down on your pelvis and as your baby grows throughout your pregnancy, he or she will move deeper into your pelvis in anticipation of birth. In addition, as your uterus expands to provide more room for your growing baby, the ligaments that support your uterus must stretch. This can cause sharp, almost stabbing pains on the side of your pelvis that can extend all the way down to your thighs. Your sciatic nerve may also be crowded by the ligaments, causing a painful or numb feeling in this area.

There are some things you can do about this pressure. The first is an exercise to minimize the pain and pressure. Standing barefoot or on a surface to secure your balance, hold onto a countertop, bend your knee and lift the foot on the side of the pelvic pain off the floor about 2 inches in front of you and hold it for 10 seconds. Repeat 10 times then reverse to the other foot.

You can relieve some of the discomfort by moving very slowly as you change positions from sitting to lying down. Rolling up and down to and from these positions will take some of the strain off sore muscles. Ask your doctor what he or she recommends for pelvic pressure in terms of exercise and whether or not you should participate in it.

Although these pains are usually due to the stretching and expanding of your body and are completely normal, severe and prolonged pain can be a sign of a serious problem. If your pelvic pressure is intense, notify your doctor immediately.

I am about 10 weeks with my fourth child. The pain I experience they called round ligament pain. Its the stretching and moving of everything basically. It happens when I move to fast switching poisitons or sneezing. It is very painful yet very Normal.

I have it also. I'm 12 weeks now, but it started around 8 weeks and happens periodically (especially with sneezing etc).

I am actually writing this for my Daughter, Shauna. She never had any problems with pelvic pressure until she was hit by a truck in the parking lot of our local video store one month ago. Nothing was broken but she tells me everyday how much her pelvic area hurts her.

I am now 22 week and I recently experienced my ligaments stretching once again. I felt them stretching around 12-13 weeks but not as severe as the recent ones. Of course this alarmed me because it was a little more painful then the first trimester; however, my doctor reassured me that this was no more than my ligament stretching when she checked me. My daughter heartbeat was normal(148) and my uterus was still closed. So for all of you who are experiencing this pain it will subside in time ( take a motrin) and relax it will go away soon....

I was having the sharp pains on standing too fast also when I was earlier in my pregnancy, around 20 weeks. They went away after my uterus seemed to fall forward and I started to show more. I am 36 weeks now and I have Braxton Hicks, but they don't hurt at all, just feel my uterus tightening.

ookay no wonder beacause i did call my obgyn and told them that ive been having so much pain in my pelvic area and my stomac is tighting, and so my dr sent me to the er to get check it was jst also a minor cause of braxton hicks which is normal by the way.. and now im 37weeks right now and i got 3weeks left i cant wait for my baby to come out

i'm 22 weeks and over the last week the pelvic pressure has intensified as well as the lower back pain. it makes it hard to sleep comfortably at night but other than that its bearable. i cant imagine what kind of pressure i'll have at 8 and 9 months, but ah well that's part of being pregnant. grin and bear it! :)
