Dehydration can cause constipation and, later in your pregnancy, premature contractions. To stay well hydrated, you and your baby need at least six to eight glasses of water each day. Drinking plenty of water can also help prevent heartburn, a common pregnancy symptom you may experience soon. Heartburn is caused by the pregnancy hormone progesterone relaxing the valve that separates your stomach from your esophagus, allowing stomach acid to seep back up. Antacids, eating smaller meals and staying upright after eating can also help combat heartburn.
