Week 15 - Blood Flow and the AFP Test

Since you got pregnant, your heart has grown in size and is working overtime to pump all that extra blood through your body and baby. Its output has increased 20 percent from normal and, by the time you are ready to deliver, it will be pumping 50 percent more than normal!

Sometime between the 15th and 17th weeks of your pregnancy, your doctor may offer you a blood test called the Alpha FetoProtein (AFP) which can determine whether your baby is at increased risk for several birth defects and if more testing is necessary. The AFP test is painless and completely safe for you and your baby.
