My Baby - Week by Week PregnancyWeek 14 - Beginning to UrinateYour baby weighs about 1.5 ounces and is 3 to 4 inches in length! His or her bladder is beginning to function and, believe it or not, your baby actually begins urinating. In fact, although doctors are not really sure how or where your baby's urine is produced, they do know it is one component of the amniotic fluid, which regenerates itself every 3 to 4 hours. Your OB may discuss performing an amniocentesis at your next appointment, particularly if you are over 35 or if you will be by the time your baby is born. Amniocentesis is a prenatal test used to detect the most common chromosomal and genetic birth defects, including Down Syndrome, cystic fibrosis, and spina bifida.
