Mother Earth Meditation
Sit in a comfortable position with your spine straight and eyes closed. Begin a calm and deep breathing pattern. Imagine your spine as an axis that keeps your body centered.
See your heart drumming its eternal beat.
Imagine your blood flow as flowing waters of the earth. The arteries are rivers of life. The veins are creeks and the capillaries streams. The heart pumps liquid up towards the surface like hot springs and underground rivers of the earth.
Imagine that your skin is the soil of the earth. The pores act as filters, the way the soil filters the rain water, as it trickles through each nook and cranny to return as new life. The skin is left glowing with renewed life.
Imagine a divine fire burning in your lower abdomen. It warms your entire body and crackles with each inhalation of oxygen. As the wind blows lightly, the fire steadily grows.
Your voice is like the wind. When you speak or sing, the plants and animals sway with it on the plains beyond your view. Each sound vibrates down into the earth.
Imagine that the point between your eyebrows is the sun during the day and the moon at night. During the day, it illuminates the body and gives it purpose. At night, the moon cools the spirit with its silvery silence.
Imagine a hearty, beautiful flower, growing up through your spine and flowering on the crown of your head. The roots descend down your legs and magnetically pull to the earth at your feet. Your baby is a healthy bud on the stem awaiting it's time to blossom.
Hormones and Stress
During meditation, endorphins, melatonin and DHEA are produced in the body and can help relieve pain. Anxiety causes the overproduction of adrenaline and cortisol while suppressing the immune system and pain-relieving hormones. Practicing meditation before childbirth will help to relieve anxiety before it starts and allow you to take control of pain management during labor.
